you might find our multi-faceted book The Guru Papers: Masks of Authoritarian Power interesting -- exposing hidden cultural, moral, mental, and "spiritual" authoritarianism. (as opposed to the political per se)

I enjoyed reading your post. I've been a fan of Hofstadter since reading GEB many years ago. I'm currently about 100 pages into I Am A Strange Loop.

One of the things I like about Hofstadter is his ability to take abstract issues and, so to speak, re-ground them in a richer human context. A case in point: In Loop he comments on his disappointment with Bertrand Russell over Russell's rather desperate and, some would say, contrived logical maneuvers following his confrontation with paradoxes of self-reference. It is one thing for a logician, qua logician, to be paralyzed by paradox, and quite another for a person engaged with the world at large. Hofstadter is able to take those abstract concerns and treat them within a richer, more human context. I find that refreshing.

Beautifully written. I can't for the life of me imagine what it must be like to be a person in the public eye who is trying his or her damnedest to make a positive difference in this world--in a world filled with detractors, jealous pundits using snippets of your life and posting them on YouTube. It's like those moments when your spouse or your friend or your co-worker is taken aback, telling you, "I can't believe what you just said," isolating that one word or phrase that raised their hackles, then holding you to it until you can show them the proper context. Only when one takes the time to find the body of text in which people like Reverend Wright, Obama and others were speaking from, can one truly understand what was being said. All the while, our media continues to chum the waters with a head, a tail or midsection to get the masses churning. And the painful truth is that there is plenty to say "God damn America" about. Does it make me love my country any less? Of course not. Just as my partner can infuriate me and I can say, "Damn you" and still not want to be with any other person in the world.

We want so badly to rise above it all, but I guess that would be too boring, and then people would simply change the channel.

Thank you for the reference to David Brooks fine essay regarding Douglas Hofstadter, and Hofstadter's moving sense of self, stretching in love and feeling outside of the physical self and intrinsically bound with his wife, Carol.

I often disagree with Brooks political perspectives, and I think he missed a few points in speaking of "habits of the underclass" without mentioning the habits of the ruling classes who consistently ignore the means of participation, i.e., affordable and quality public education, access to healthcare, jobs that are not outsourced, and other resources which also "undermines social trust."

Yet, he just as clearly noted the fallacy of Ayn Rand's philosophy of selfishness and rugged individualism. I don't believe that the New Age philosophies which challenge people to suspend preconcieved notions from time to time,to empty their heads of clutter, is necessarily "narcissistic," but perhaps he has a specific spiritualism or philosophy in mind when he refers to "New Age."

However, overall, Brooks made some very good social points with compassion and sensitivity about how we are bound together through loops of thought and information. Yet, it is the ability of the conscious mind to step outside of this complexity of influences and thoughts, to reflect back upon itself and choose a conscious path with a creative mind that is greater than the sum of its parts. I liked Brooks reminding us to appreciate all of those, living and dead, who contributed collectively to the strange loop that is each of us, and all of us together.

I revere the physically dead authors of many of the books on my library shelves to be very much alive within my thoughts and within the thoughts of others. Such is the benefit and extension of human longevity through language and shared information media.

Agreed, and we can hope that any universal healthcare service will not be under the watch of either for-profit healthcare providers nor for-profit healthcare insurance companies. What I would like to see is a basic healthcare provider system, where physicians, nurses and technicians are salaried. Care and treatment plans would be based upon patients' needs, rather than on the profit incentive to provide expensive, and sometimes unnecessary, scans and tests, or over-charging people for medications and incidental medical and hospital services.

Of course, private medical insurance will still be available for those who desire and can afford the best,or at least more costly, medical care and treatment.

Amen

The "much-neeed renaissance" in healthcare is possible if our elected leaders will recognizw that reimbursement for medically unnecessary procedures, medically unnecessary diagnostic testing, and medically unnecessary services must be denied. Unless the incentives for providing those services are removed, healthcare costs will continue to escalate, premiums, co-pays and deductible will continue to shackle millions of families.
